The
Cu Chi Tunnels is an underground network which was excavated
by the Vietnamese and used by the Viet Cong during both
the French-Indochina War (1946-1954) and the Vietnam
War (1955-1975).
The district of Cu Chi is located 70 kilometers to the northwest of Saigon near the so-called "Iron Triangle".
Both the Saigon River and Route 1 pass through the region which served
as major supply routes in and out of Saigon during the war. This area
was also the termination of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Because of this, the Cu Chi and the nearby Ben Cat districts had immense strategic value for the NLF (National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam).Situated near Ho Chi Minh City, the Cuchi Tunnels took around 20 years to construct and were finished in the 1960s. Stretching for over 200km (124 miles) and connecting numerous villages in the provinces, the tunnels once housed mini-hospitals, store rooms and factories, and were used as living quarters by both Vietnamese fighters and local villagers.
During the French-Indochina war, Vietnam struggled to gain independence from France, whilst during the Vietnam war, the United States and South Vietnamese fought to prevent communists in North Vietnam from uniting with South Vietnam under communist rule.
The Americans feared this would lead to the spread of communism in Asia and as a result, launched a military attack on the Viet Cong during the 1960s. The tunnels stand today as a symbol of the struggle by the Vietnamese people on one of the most famous battlegrounds of the Vietnam War.
Cu Chi district was heavily bombed during the two wars and was particularly targeted at night, forcing residents to live in underground tunnels. Today, visitors to the site can experience life underground during their tour of the tunnels and imagine what life would have been like for the Vietnamese
Visitors can also gain a better understanding of one of history’s most violent wars, which saw 458,000 Americans soldiers killed and more than 303,000 wounded. Between 185,000 and 225,000 South Vietnamese were also killed during the war and between 500,000 and 570,000 were wounded; in addition, approximately 900,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong were killed, along with over one million North and South Vietnamese civilians casualties.
